Making Holiday Travel with Kids Less Stressful: Tips from One Mom to Another
By Brooke Abbott Abron
Hey, Mama! I see you out here trying to plan holiday travel while managing the chaos of everyday life. First off, I want you to know—you’ve got this! Whether you’re tackling the airport with a toddler on your hip or prepping for a family road trip, traveling with kids doesn’t have to be a stress-fest. In fact, it can be a joyful adventure your family will talk about for years to come.
As a mom who’s juggled travel with a baby, a stroller, and all the snacks (because heaven forbid we forget the snacks), I’ve learned a few tricks along the way. So, grab your coffee, settle in, and let me share some tips that will help you navigate holiday travel like a pro.
Surviving the Airport: Toddler Edition
I’ll admit, the airport can feel like a battlefield when you’re traveling with little ones. But with a game plan—and maybe a little patience—you can get through it without losing your mind (or your kid’s shoes in the Starbucks line).
- Babywearing is a Lifesaver: Whether it’s a baby carrier, ring sling or wrap, keeping your hands free is a must. Trust me, you’ll need those hands to grab passports, snacks, or a wandering toddler.
- Airplane Strollers Are Magic: Lightweight strollers like the Ergobaby Metro+ is my go to because it is perfect for zipping through security and storing in the overhead bin. Plus, they’re compact enough not to feel like you’re pushing a tank.
- Plan Around Nap Time: If you can, book flights during your child’s usual nap time. A sleeping baby on a plane is worth every bit of effort it takes to schedule it.
- Tire Them Out Before Boarding: Airports are full of space to explore. Let your little ones walk, run, or even dance their energy out before you board. The more tired they are, the more likely they’ll nap mid-flight.
- Ease Ear Pressure with Snacks or Sips: Have a bottle, pacifier, or sippy cup ready for takeoff and landing to help with ear pressure. Older kids can chew on a snack or suck on a straw or sippy cup.
Keeping Kids Happy (and You Sane) During Flights
Flights are long, but they don’t have to feel like forever. Keeping your kids entertained is key to a peaceful trip.
- Pack a Surprise Bag: Fill a small bag with new toys or books they’ve never seen before. The novelty factor works wonders for keeping them occupied.
- Screen Time Saves the Day: If ever there’s a time to lean into tablets or screens, this is it. Download movies, shows, or games ahead of time, and don’t forget kid-sized headphones!
- Snacks for Days: Seriously, don’t underestimate the power of snacks. Pack a mix of healthy and fun options to keep little tummies happy.
Prepping Your Little Travelers
Kids thrive on routine and predictability, so helping them understand what to expect can make all the difference.
- Storytime About Flying: Read books about airplanes or show videos of what happens during a flight. This can make the experience feel less intimidating.
- Practice Makes Perfect: For older toddlers, role-play going through security or sitting on the plane. Make it fun and interactive!
- Let Them Be Part of the Process: Give your child a small backpack they can pack themselves with their favorite toys or snacks. Feeling involved can build excitement.
Stress-Free Travel Is Possible
Listen, Mama. Things won’t always go as planned, and that’s okay. Focus on the joy of the destination and the memories you’re creating along the way. Here’s how to lighten your load:
- Keep It Simple: Overpacking is tempting, but stick to the essentials. Mix-and-match outfits and packing cubes can save your sanity.
- Budget-Friendly Options: Look for off-peak flights, or consider road trips to save on airfare. Bring your own food and snacks to cut down on costs.
- Have a “Go With the Flow” Attitude: Remember, your kids feed off your energy. If you stay calm, they’ll be more likely to stay calm too.
Road Trips: A Chance to Bond
Road trips with kids are less about the miles and more about the memories. Here’s how to make them fun:
- Break It Up: Plan for stops where kids can run around and stretch their legs. Bonus if there’s a park or playground!
- Audiobooks Are Gold: Family-friendly audiobooks can keep everyone entertained for hours.
- Comfort Is Key: Pack pillows, blankets, and their favorite stuffed animals to make the car ride cozy.
My Holiday Packing List for Families
For the Littlest Travelers:
- Diapers, wipes, and a portable changing pad.
- Bottles, pacifiers, and formula (if needed).
- Sleep sacks & swaddles.
For Toddlers & Big Kids:
- Snacks, snacks, and more snacks!
- A favorite toy, book, or tablet.
- Extra clothes for those inevitable messes.
For You:
- Travel documents (and backups!). I use my child’s passport card and we have photos of all travel documents. For your older children get a state or REAL ID and keep it in your wallet for them.
- Sign the family up for:
- TSA PreCheck
- CLEAR
- CLEAR + TSA PreCheck
- Mobile Passport Control (International travel)
- Global Entry (International Travel)
- A cozy wrap or blanket scarf.
- Your favorite snacks (because you deserve them too).
Let’s Talk Travel Gear
I get it—finding the right travel gear can be a game-changer. My go-to recommendations:
- Strollers: Ergobaby Metro+, GB Pockit, or UPPAbaby Minu for easy airport navigation.
- Car Seats: The Doona Infant Car Seat is perfect for travel, the foldable Diono Radian 3RXT SafePlus, or try the lightweight Cosco Scenera NEXT.
- Travel Bags: Use packing cubes to keep things organized and easily accessible. Don’t judge, but I got some great ones at a great price from Temu recently for an international trip with my child. They have since survived 4 trips and not a tear or zipper issued yet.
At the end of the day, holiday travel is an adventure for your family. The little hiccups along the way? They’ll become part of the story you tell later (and probably laugh about). Remember to give yourself grace, embrace the chaos, and focus on the memories you’re making with your kids.
Mama, you’re doing an amazing job. Now go make those holiday travel dreams come true!
